Belgium
Belgian brass and aluminum architectural 8 days, time only mantel clock, "Fr. Somers, Bruscelles, 1914-1915" on the dial's date window, "H.A Bruxelles" on movement's rectangular back plate, c1915
the large heavy metal case, with its four 3/4 fluted columns, appears to have its original surfaces in very nice condition. We believe the gray metal panels to be aluminum, an exotic metal of the time. The fancy brass hands match the pendulum. Ht 22"
Belgian, E. Giddius Rousseau, Bruxelles, a green Neuchatel clock and bracket, quarter striking, with 13 piece dial, c1790
in generally good and as-found condition, several of the pieces of ormolu are loose on the case (held in place with brass nails); there are some hairlines on the dial, which is signed as in the headline above. Fretted, chased and gilt hour hand is original; gilt minute hand is not chased and is probably an old replacement. The original finish with some restoration and now peeling a bit from neglect, will need attention. Robust movement with rear count wheel has anchor/tic-tac 'scape. Quarters are struck on original 2 bells mounted under top case trim. Ht 33"
C.1900, France/Belgium, a Home Made Folk Art "Fireplace" automaton,
with separate movement for the spinning wheel. The clock movement has been adapted from a mantel clock, with levers added to the warning arm and strike shaft, their motion carried down to the automaton by wires. A rear cover comes off for adjusting the wires. The movement for the spinning wheel is an iron plated job with brass bushings, and with a large contrate wheel to allow for winding from the side of the case (note contrate wheel is both crude and worn and will need attention). The little painted lady at her ivory spinning wheel is losing the paint on her face and arms.
18th CENTURY BELGIAN TALLCASE Circa 1780-90; Maker: ANDRE SAUVEUR a HERSTAL, BELGIUM
A very attractive Belgian carved oak tallcase. The beautiful case is carved with flowers, urns and garlands and has a glass lenticle in the door. The pewter dial centre is profusely engraved. The chapter ring, all spandrels and boss are pewter, which is typical of these Belgian tallcase clocks. The makers name is engraved in the boss also. Note the very early style of brass hands. The one day movement with iron frame is also typical of this era. The clock strikes the hour and half hour on a cast bell. The clock is in good running order.
C.1810, Belgian skeleton clock
Sarton, a Liege, 8-Day weight driven, striking skeleton clock in very good condition. Sarton was a great experimenter and many of his clocks have a remontoire for the time train, driven off the strike train. However, in this example he uses a substantial weight to power the delicate time train for a full week; in order to get adequate travel, he placed the winding barrel at the top of the movement, behind the plates, giving it a travel of over 12".
C.1930, Belgian Menize pigeon timer
with locking oak security box, as-found. This is a 12 bird unit similar to one we sold last November, however there are no number pieces. On the other hand this one has a piece of timing or graph paper in place (minor damage to the paper). Photographed in and out of the box. Diameter of cylinder 6"; Height of oak box 7".
C.1930, Belgian, Pigeon Timer
in original oak lock box, both with serial number 17409. This is a 12 pigeon recorder, and 8 of the tiny aluminum canisters for the pigeons leg are still intact inside. Uses circular graph paper for recording, but no sheets are present. Although pigeon racing is popular here, it is the Rage in Asia, and a champion pigeon can bring $10,000 for breeding stock. Brand name "Belgica" Canister 6 "; height of box 7" $200-300

C.1825, Belgian, Sarton a'Leige, Ormolu and marble architectural clock, with sprays of leaves, scrolls and surmounted by pineapple finials and a large urn surrounded by a cloth swag.
Condition: the delicate bell strike movement has removable pivots for timing functions on cleaning. Movement has been re-bushed. Note the time side click has failed and although no damage is visible externally, we are uncertain. However, when you apply pressure to the minute hand the crutch wags vigorously, so the basic train is intact. Height 15 inches
