The Schneider Cuckoo Clocks Co. massive cuckoo clock, eight day, time and strike, with a music box.
The Schneider Cuckoo Clocks company was founded in 1848 by Anton Schneider working from his farmhouse in Schonach. The family business is now in its sixth generation of clockmakers. Juergen Schneider designed this particular 87 inch cuckoo clock featuring the European Red Deer crown. As you might suspect, the deer head and antlers are life size. This clock was in production for about nine years and was discontinued with respect to Juergen Schneiders passing in 1989. The company makes a similar cuckoo but uses an eagle or bear on the crown. This clock like all Black Forrest Clocks is made from Linden wood, a fine grained wood suitable for hand carving. Carvings are done by a group of highly skilled woodcarvers who have worked for the Schneider company for the last 20 to 40 years. To the best of our knowledge there are only 4 of this model cuckoo clock in the United State, this one being one of the four. This clock is an eight day, time and strike, with a music box. The music box plays three tunes; Dr. Zhivago, Edelweiss, and the Blue Danube, rotating on the hour. The cuckoo strikes on the hour and half hour. This is a three weight clock, one for the time, strike, and music box. This clock offers "night shut-off", one of its many features. It will weigh almost 100 pounds and requires 3 good size boxes to transport. If you are a cuckoo collector you sure better consider this one. We don't have a clue what the hammer price will be but we have heard of them selling over $10,000.
