C.1830, German, Johan Rombach, 3-Wt Shield Cuckoo clock in original, as-found condition.
This clock was acquired by J. Cheney Wells in 1952, 110 years after it was repaired by S.S. McKenzie in Topsfield, Mass, with sticker dated Nov 1st, 1842. The original paper over wood dial has a vertical crack, and the dial is dark, but still fully legible. The alarm weight is lacking, but alarm is otherwise complete; primitive weights and counter weights are still there (total 4). The cuckoo bird has a more interesting look than any we have ever seen. Original paper covered wooden side doors are still intact, also the original bellows and flutes. Maker's signature on the reverse of the dial. Funds from the sale of this clock will assist Old Sturbridge Village in the acquisition of American timepieces. This is the earliest cuckoo we have ever sold. No pendulum. Dial Height 13.5 inches
