C.1880, French, Japy Freres, bronze figural clock in the Louis XVI style.
Condition: most of the gilding has been rubbed off the case by a fastidious maid, however some still exists down in the crevices. The original of this clock by Ragot can be seen in Niehuser's book titled French Bronze Clocks, page 206, fig 219, and in the expanded 1981 Tardy's The Most Beautiful French Clocks, book II, page 32, showing a foto from the Grassy collection in Madrid. No references give the title of this work, but it is known that a rooster is the sign of alertness, and the male cherub to the right [Amor] has an oil lamp in his left hand, perhaps tempting the unknown with the female cherub opposite. Bell strike Japy movement with Gold Medal medallion, and the number 161, and with matching number on pendulum. Extremely heavy. Height 26.5 inches [67.4cm]
