The dial has been restored, as indicated by the writing on the back which reads "FD / 1981 ". It is in excellent condition. The movement is clean, and will need new weight cords. Iron fan with two blades. Iron movement uprights have distinct, but small stepped feet. Turned iron crown wheel arbor support. Suspension shroud measures 4 inches in height. The bell is signed "Triadou a Montauban ". The pendulum with folding flat iron rod has a brass bob that is quite dented. The weights are likely much later than the clock. The 1789 Revolutionaries adopted the Phrygian cap, originally worn by the inhabitants of Phrygia and the soldiers of ancient Persia. Seen as a symbol of liberation, these caps are represented in brass on the ends of both date hands. The calendar on the dial is that of the French Republic which used a standard 30 day month and a 10 day week. The year engraved on the brass fronton also used this calendar. The establishment of the Republic was used as the start date for the French Republican Calendar (in French, "Calendrier Republicain" or "Calendrier Revolutionnaire "). The legislative assembly declared September 22nd, 1793 as the beginning of Year II. That is the date engraved on the lower fronton of this clock as "L'an 2 ". This clock was sold by Ivoire Saint-Etienne on October 13th, 2012 as lot number 43.
