Cogniet, a Paris, an early 18th century brass and tortoise shell veneered, ormolu mounted pendule d' alcove, case with base on foliate ornamented feet, and having outcurved sides and scroll cut skirt, mounted with conforming gilt moldings terminating in foliate roundels, the gilt, cast door with incurved lower corners and arch top, and cast, molded cornice surmounted by a removable caddy top, with urn finials and foliate mounted corners, gilt brass dial with roman numeral cartouches above a cast ornament with masks, festoons, and central cartouche signed "Cogniet a Paris", fancy blued steel hands, signed brass movement with large barrel and crown wheel escapement, the striking activated by pulling a cord at the base, and sounding the last hour and quarter on two bells concealed beneath the top, with matching, incurved wall mounted bracket most of the cast components and dial regilded, one molding missing from base of bracket, top finials loose, fasteners for mounts replaced, many surfaces beneath mounts ebonized, shell veneers with repairs and splits, a few cartouches with minor chips, one with minor hairlines, movement with reblued hammer arbors, tops of arbors filed to accept hammers, ticks and strikes
