Japan
Japan, Edo period, striking wall clock, or Shaku-Dokei, commonly called "stick clock", the time movement of lantern style construction with crown wheel and verge driving the large, horizontal balance atop movement, delicately pierced front plate is
overall excellent 100% original condition. Brass piercing to the case sides allow sound to escape. This clock comes to us from a private collection in New Jersey, and has been in one place for the last three decades. Bottom drawer contains winding key.
Japan, Seikosha Clock Co., Tokyo, (now known as Seiko), 8 day, time and strike spring driven movement gallery clock.
Large hardwood case that is most likely made from their native hardwood in original finish that is decayed in many places. There is a loose repair to a piece on the door just to the left of the bottom latch. The original paper dial has age darkened, stained, wear at the winding arbors and at the mounting screws in a couple places. Interesting movement that looks to be a copy of an American version. Original hands.
Japan, ÓAÒ on dial, probably Aichi of Nagoya, BLINKING EYE parlor clock, with typical open spring movement, this one with lever escapement, the balance showing on the dial, and with a hidden connection from the lever to the eyes that produces animation.
overall very good original condition. This is an uncommon model that we have not sold before, the full dial plate depicts a hand painted female gypsy [with very minor losses at this time]. The action of the eyes is a little weak, but fully apparent. Ht 19Ó

these are good looking examples, and we hear ticking when they swing, but both set knobs are absent. The elephant has some blue/green oxidation spots. The kangaroo is 9" high. Sold as is, no further details available
Linden, Japan, modern reproduction stained wood 8 days, gravity wall clock, c1990
this carved and gold printed novelty clock is in very nice condition, with just a few small scratches. The saw tooth runner is fine. The good enamel dial, with "Anno 1750", is also signed Linden, but the cow tail pendulum has been repaired and is missing its end piece. Ht 33"
Japanese, double foliot lantern clock, large, "Nicho Tenpu Yagura-dokei", 30 hour, steel framed movement with tooled brass covers, now on a purpose made wall bracket and with later weights
although the wall bracket and weights are modern, the clock itself is otherwise c1790 and in very good original condition. Small dent in dial. Larger lanterns like this [16" ht] often occur on a floor base, which may be a simple trapezoid paneled affair, or open with delicate curved legs. For centuries, the japanese divided the day into 6 daylight hours and 6 night time hours, and their clocks designed to vary the length of each hour to correspond with the daylight offered by the sun. The work day and study day were thus longer in the summer and shorter in the winter.
