As with many of these transitional clocks after Davis left the firm, one finds combinations of signatures. In this case the movement is double marked with two original signatures: On the left Howard and Davis, Boston, and on the right, E. Howard and Co., Boston. Sizes other that 5 were made to order and it is obvious that Ed Howard conserved labor by using a movement off the shelf that was proper for this clock, stamping his own signature in open space on the front plate. The balance of the clock is proper and original, and the case retains superb rosewood graining over the fruitwood case. Height 38 inches
