A Georgian bracket clock in a mahogany case with a bell top dating from circa 1780 with a rare painted dial. The clock has been in one Sussex family, very probably from new. The twin fusee movement originally had a verge escapement, but has been altered to the later anchor escapement, probably in Victorian times. The engraved backplate has chinoiserie decoration. The dial is painted in the style of the earliest painted longcase dials, c1780 with flowers in the corners (see Barder: 'The Georgian Bracket Clock' p103). The chinoiserie backplate, the case style and the design of the pineapple finials, all support a date around 1775-1780. The clock is shown here in its original condition. It is currently under restoration and will be ready in January 2002. The dial will be lightly and sympathetically restored, the movement overhauled and the case cleaned and restored.
