A Baird Figure Eight Advertising Clock Jolly Tar Tobacco, c. 1888-9

Maker: Edward P. Baird, Montreal and NY. 31 inches length, 18 1/2" upper bezel, 5" deep. Condition: 8.5 on scale of 1-10. Baird advertising clocks were originally made in Montreal in 1887, then moved to Plattsburgh in 1890. Transitional Baird clocks are those which were made at the very end of the Montreal factory to the first year of the opening of the Plattsburgh factory. The case design is that of Montreal and the movement is marked New York and Montreal. It is really wonderful to narrow the manufacture of the clock down to within two years which is not often the case since many styles of other clocks were made for such a prolonged period. This is a rare model, the papier mache molded bezels are done in the tobacco leaf pattern. In other words, the design is intended to look like tobacco leaves. The clock is in 100 percent original condition including the original paint and coloring. It is literally untouched! The original dial is marked Seth Thomas below the 12 and Edward P. Baird and Co. above the 6. The original movement is marked Seth Thomas for Edward P. Baird and Co. New York and Montreal. The movement is week duration, time only. The dial is 11 inches with original spade hands; slight staining and aging otherwise perfect. It has the correct and original pendulum made by Seth Thomas for the Montreal and early Plattsburgh clocks. There is only remnants of the original factory label left inside the case.
