American Durfee and Enches Tallcase Clock, Rhode Island, c. 1884
Rare "Durfee and Enches", Providence Rhode Island grandfather clock. Walter Durfee is the very famous American clockmaker often mentioned as the "father of the modern clocks". He used this name and street address from 1880-1884. Magnificent mahogany case with wonderful inlay . With bronze Corinthian capitals to the hood and case. Case contains the Makers label pasted inside the front door. The very high quality eight day two weight movement strikes the hour on a gong ( updated from bell-strike years ago.) Beautiful brass and silver dial is signed by the makers. Has the very desirable "rolling moon" which indicates the phases of the moon. Also contains a calendar aperture. Stands 8' 6" tall.
