C.1830, Asa Munger, Auburn, NY, mahogany 8- day, 2-weight shelf clock
with bell strike and seconds hand. Mungers do not turn up that often and it is more unusual to have two in one sale. This first clock needs more work than the next lot, but still has good potential. Note new glass over dial (should be reverse painted tablet); mirror in bottom is old mirror cut from a larger frame (looks fine). There are nick and scrapes in the case and some of the very fine trim molding are broken away and will have to be replaced; case is dirty. The dial is newly painted. Retains original wall papering and good Munger label inside. Eagle pendulum is new, but is the type most often found on these clocks. For reference, see Distin and Bishop, page 140, figure 294, and for reference on the movement, see Horology Americana, page 145. Weights for this clock are home-made cast iron and probably 25 percent heavier than they need to be; they would work OK on a tall clock. Does run; estimate reflects condition. Height 39" $1000-1500
