C.1885, French, Industrial"Steam Hammer
in good, as-found condition. This clock has been in storage and is dirty, the movement barley ticks and strikes but is mechanically sound; no chips in marble, etc. In this model, the up and down motion of the hammer striking the anvil continues for the full running duration of the clock (8-Days). To quote from Derek Roberts' book: Mystery Novelty and Fantasy Clocks, (1999), page 260, "The hammer forms part of a complex pendulumÖ..someone would put the metal to be treated below the hammer and on his signal a man in the gallery would depress the lever (showing left) , releasing the steam and actuating the hammer." Note F/Slow corrections are made by turning a nut under the central steam cap. With original movement, striking the hours on a gong. A good, complete, example. Height 18" $2000-2500
