C.1970, English replica of 19th century Austrian skeleton clock

(Modern), F.H. Whitlock, English replica of early 19th Century Austrian weight driven skeleton clock. Included with this item is an "Info Please" reply alleging that it is a Simon Willard skeleton clock (not so). This is a quality reproduction, faithful to the last detail, including the pull wind in the marble base, which enables winding without raising the glass dome. The lengthy chain travels 'round a large winding drum behind the thermometer, cris-crosses and around a second wheel the same size behind the dial; the weight at left simply keeps tension on the chain so it will not slip; the small weight at right rises and falls with the driving weight, but is attached to the rear of the winding drum and does not provide motive power. Information on the original may be found in Derek Roberts book Continental and American Skeleton Clocks (1990). The flat glass cover has a small crack in the rear that is not noticeable with the dome in place. Signed by maker on rear. Height 23"
