Carved Column and Splat Mantle Clock c. 1832

Dimensions:36" tall by 18" wide. Maker/Mfgr./Author/Artist:Chauncey Boardman and Joseph Wells, Bristol, Connecticut. Condition:Excellent; good running condition; professionally restored lower door glass with reverse painting. Circa:CA 1832 Materials:Walnut case with wood dial and wood works; reverse painted door glass. Description:This tall mantle clock was made by the clockmaking company operated by Chauncey Boardman and Joseph Wells who were associated in the clock business from about 1832 to 1843 in Bristol, Connecticut. During that time, they made many clocks with wooden works and a variety of case styles. This clock has those marvelous and deeply carved side columns plus a top splat depicting ocean waves with a sea shell in the center. The paper label inside the clock has the usual amount of yellowing and a few tears (see pictures), and overall is in great condition including the makers' names. The movement has been professionally checked and adjusted for perfect running order. It strikes the hours on a bell. The lower door glass has an original reverse-painted scene which was restored professionally and looks great. The wood dial is in excellent condition. There is an alarm mechanism in the movement which is rarely found in wood works movements. Although this alarm mechanism is complete, it isn't operational for all practical purposes. The small brass center dial would have to be tightened in order to set the time when the alarm begins to ring.. The original alarm weight is present and attached properly.
