Refer to Bower's Encyclopedia of Automatic Musical Instruments, page 71, and also internet resources on the same type box. The "basement" of the chalet contains a 6 tune cylinder music box, key wound, with 3 brass levers on the opposite end for Stop, Play and Change. The case itself depicts a typical 19th century chalet from the Alps, with stones on the roof (to keep the snow in place), external fireplace damper, lots of windows, and just under the peak of the roof, a well made French 8-day clock movement, with brass Roman numerals on a wooden dial. The box plays in lively fashion, starting on the hour after the strike, or at will. There are some losses to the wooden case and a few roof 'stones' missing, but overall it is very good. Height 19Ó, width 23.5Ó $6,000-$7,000
