This beautifully made high-grade fusee chronometer has an unusual plate design that we have not seen before The movement retains its original yellow gilding intact, with blued steel work. Both the backplate and the dial are engraved "J. B. Mayo, Chicago". The solid rosewood case with brass inlay is later than the movement. The original case may have been damaged and a new case (well done) was made with the brass and ivory elements off the old case. The beveled glass in the bezel is perfect. The brass case enclosing movement has the serial no. 2194. The ivory inlay in the key-lock case matches that number. Despite the newer case, we expect this chronometer to attract collector's attention. Height 9.25Ó $2,500-$3,000
