ENGLISH 18th CENTURY TALLCASE, Circa 1785 Maker: JOHN BARNISH ROCHDALE, ENGLAND

John Barnish was born about 1760, probably the son of William Barnish of Rochdale, Lancaster. Numerous longcase clocks are known by him, including a two-tune musical dated 1785. He is documented in Brian Loomes book: "Clock Makers of Northern England." An exceptional mahogany tallcase in the Hepplewhite design. Note the flat pillars with inlay to the hood. Prince of Wales feathers are inlaid in the broken arch of hood. There is stringing, fan and shell inlay through out the grand case. The dial is original paint, signed by the maker and has a moon roller, indicating the phases of the moon. Also a seconds subsidiary dial and engraved brass hands. Corners spandrels have a shell design. This is an eight day tallcase, the brass movement having four pillars, anchor escapement and running in fine order. Height: 95 inches (242cm)-to top of finial Width: 16.5 inches (42cm)-at the trunk 22 inches (56cm)-at the foot Depth: 9.5 inches (24cm)-depth of hood.
