An impressive fire-gilt bronze and black patinated clock of the 18th century. The case is unique in its design of two dolphins holding the encased movement with an Austrian Emperors bust atop. The bronze work is highly engraved and engine-turned. The convex glass to the dial, also special with ample curve. Of special note is the porcelain dial having plain roman numerals rather than the typical Austrian arabic style. Reasoning, as this clock would be in the period before the Austrians had perfected their skills of porcelain dial-making, these dials were imported from France. Note the outer 5 minute track on the dial which is correct for this period. The quality brass movement is eight day endurance and the gong strikes the half and full hours. Gong stand is also austrian.
