Erastus Hodges, Very Rare, Pillar & Scroll, ca 1825.

Torrington "East-West" 30 hour movement, designed and made by Norris North. These narrow cases may have labels by Norris North, his Brother Ethel North, or Erastus Hodges, the central financier of Torrington, Connecticut, and the North Factory. The unique movement strikes on a bell, and is in good running condition. The mahogany veneer case is 29 1/2 inches high, 13 3/8 inches wide at the base, and in excellent condition with original backboards. All the glue blocks appear to be original. The old finish has been cleaned and polished. The dial is correct but repainted. Both scroll tips were broken but professionally repaired with the original pieces. The upper glass has been replaced. The beautiful lower tablet is an exact copy of an original Hodges tablet by Tom Moberg. The wooden mahogany finials are exact copies from a Hodges original. The label is dark but very readable, and is complete except for a few flaked pieces. There is an ivory escutcheon but the inner lock disc is missing. An early, added door pull has been left. In a recent auction, an excellent original example went for near $8,000. In a northeast auction last year a case only, with broken glass, went for about our minimum. Some clocks suffer badly with time but with the authentic repairs mentioned, this charming, petite, example still provides a fine piece of early American Clock history.
