A three decker clock with label "Eight Day/BRASS/CLOCKS/MANUFACTURED BY /R. and J.B. TERRY/Bristol, Conn." ca 1835-1836.
The Terry brothers, Ralph and John Burnham, were sons of Samuel Terry, brother of Eli. Others in Bristol were making similar movements but the TerryÕs movements had front strap plates with decorative grooved lines. This 8 day, Ives type strap brass movement, is running with a good strong beat, strikes hours on a large iron bell. There may be 75 percent of the label on the backboard, enough to read the importantsections. Nice wood dial with mirror behind opening. Both glasses are Mobergreplacements, very nice, and period. Old hands, weights, pendulum, two ivoryescutcheons, working locks with a key. Mahogany veneer case is 38 incheshigh, very little veneer problems, no repairs and a small chip or two tobe fixed. The bottom board is rounded in front. Some say it should be flat.If the case were perfect, the clock would sell for $2, 000. Quite a bargainat our minimum. This almost identical case, identical movement and labelcan be researched in, "The Contributions of Joseph Ives to Connecticut ClockTechnology, 1810-1862, " by Kenneth D. Roberts, Revised Second Edition, pages178-183.
