Aaron Dodd Crane of West Caldwell, New Jersey, invented the torsion pendulum clock in 1841.

Our clock is the last in the series of his rotating pendulum clocks, or torsion pendulum clocks that called for the use of six, gilt brass cased lead balls. This clock is called, "Crane Model D. Twelve Month Mantle Clock", ca 1845-46. This classic four column ebonized case is 22" high and 14" at its widest. Original gold washed brass, repousee decorations and the 8 column capitals. The original paper dial is behind glass, and thus remarkably well preserved, and is signed "Year Clock Co., New York/ A. D. CraneÕs Patent". The fancy repousee bezel retains excellent gold wash. Both glasses are original including the acid etched lower glass with lyre motif. CraneÕs brass movement is 8 day, massive size, very complicated, with double fusee, time and strike. There is a wonderful, original, green label on inside of backboard. References: There are several, but you must read thechapter on Aaron Dodd Crane in Tran Duy LyÕs new book, "American Clocks", Volume 3, pages 175-193. The two most recent sales of CraneÕs torsion pendulum clocks at east coast auctions were $11, 000 and $9, 400.
