The case is adorned with ribbed trim strips and ribbed flat false columns. There are latching access doors on either side of the movement and the front door is key locking, with a key. The bezel is hinged and when opened the dial, movement, and seat board assembly slide out. The bezel glass is old but some of the old putty fell out so they put new putty around the whole bezel. The case is 49" tall and 17.25" wide, it is tight and solid but does have some shrinkage gaps in the bezel and the curved bottom. Overall case finish is very good. The 14" iron, painted, dial is signed "Thos Taylor Ellesmere". Signature is now slightly faded. Several Thos Taylors are listed in "Britten's" book, between 1638 and 1853. The Roman numerals and chapter ring are thinning, but legible and have not been touched. The hands are original. Movement is 8 day, bell strike on the hours. It is of the same configuration as most English two train tall clock movements. The post profile dates to about 1800, so this clock may very well date before the 1850's. Cast into the cast iron false plate is the name "Walker and Hughes". The pendulum bob and stick appear original. The weights are for a Morbier clock, but work well and the clock is running.
