This clock deserves to be restored, it wouldn't take much effort. For sure it needs bone hands, new numerals, change out the bright red cloth behind the front openings, and repair the small chink out of the top. The early 8 day spring movement is signed, "Frankfeld & Co. A.T. April 24, 1866". The movement is pinned and has a brass sidearm, on which the name is stamped, and it is from this sidearm that the wires operating the bird come from. I can't find any references to this type movement in the clock books, or of the name Frankfeld in the Bulletin Index. It looks every bit like our early OG movements with the addition of the side arm. Could it be an early American cuckoo clock? The 18" red oak case is relatively simple, and has never had an ornament on the roof. The old wood bird is mounted on wood, which also dates the clock to about 1865. Reference for #233 & #234:"Black Forest Clocks", by Rick Ortenburger.
