L. Frank, 55 John Street, New York, ironfront C. 1858-1861.
This is another rare ironfront with an excellent painting, good colors used to depict the Spanish buildings, sky, ocean and other features. Like most ironfronts MOP was used to highlight certain features. The iron case is 18" high. The 8 day movement is not signed and is marked only, "5". Strikes on a coil gong. Paper dial is original, somewhat soiled, but certainly still functional. The glass is held by original white putty. The gold paint may not be original. I would guess it was originally black and someone wanted it gold. There is very little information on L. Frank, his full name is Levy Frank. What little I could find indicated that he probably sold clocks made and cased by others, like the Harlem company. The label does not appear to be an overpaste.
