Forestville Clock Company, Forestville, Conn., hanging clock, "Drop Octagon No. 2", C. 1855.
Very little is known about this company. J.C. Brown and others formed Forestville Manufacturing Co. about 1835 and operated it until about 1855 when it was bought by E.N.Welch and others. It went thru several name changes including Forestville Clock Manufacturing Co. It is generally felt that the name was shortened to Forestville Clock Co. about 1850, for trade convenience, and hence this label. The movement is signed, "E.N.Welch, Forestville". The hands, original lower tablet, and the label, all indicate the clock is C. 1850-1855. It was not shown in a Welch trade catalog until 1878. Mahogany veneer case is 25" high, slant bottom, octagon top. The carved ears are exceptionally nice. The dial was repainted on the old pan. 8 day movement strikes a coil gong on the hours. This is a very nice, early wall clock. Ly-Welch, page 118.
