The full label had a paper overpaste, probably a scene of something. Some ambitious collector tried to remove the overpaste but it was too tight and removed most of the old label. We can definitely read, "Bristol, Conn", but everything else is mostly guesswork. In researching the movement we believe it is the one pictured in Ken Roberts book, "The Contributions of Joseph Ives to Connecticut Clock Technology, 1810-1862", page 139. Also read pages 137-141. The movement has a seldom seen "strike snail" inside the movement plates. It is 8 day, 2 large period iron weights, period bob and key. The large wood dial is very good, retains all the gold paint, has one scratch, not bad. One movement cable roller replaced, both dust covers intact on top. The mahogany veneer case stands 37" high, has full turned columns, carved capitals, turned ball feet. The veneer is basically very good, front is excellent, a few nicks on the bottom and sides caused by normal wear and tear. The previous collector-owner said the 3 glasses are replacements. I don't see it that way. The putty in top and bottom glasses is original and there is no evidence the excellent mirror was replaced, but it is too nice to be 170 years old. Small crack in the upper glass, bottom glass has been rebacked at some time. Good ivory escutscheons, one lock operative, one isn't.
