Because of the fast growing demand for pillar and scroll clocks plus a rapidly diminishing supply, we've been buying every one we can find providing it is in good condition. This lovely example was made around 1828 in Bristol, Connecticut by Samuel Terry, brother of Eli Terry Sr. Samuel made very few of these after 1828 and this one has some features not found on any we've found to date. For instance, behind the scrolls, on the top of the case is the original packing block with its knob. I've never found a pillar and scroll with this still on the clock. The replaced reverse-painted lower door glass is quite attractive and appropriate to the period (see photograph). The paper label inside the case is quite well preserved and includes the full Samuel Terry name. The movement has been cleaned and adjusted for good service. It operates the clock well and strikes correctly during its one-day period of operation. The feet have had some professional attention and are solid and correct. The wooden dial retains colorful features to the spandrals (corners). Although the numerals are somewhat faded they are otherwise clearly defined. The hands are original as are the cast iron weights. There has been a repair to each scroll- typical for this style case. This is an excellent 'buy' and one of the harder-to-find pillar and scrolls by the venerable SAMUEL TERRY. Height: 32 in. (81.28 cm) Depth: 5 in. (12.70 cm) Width: 17 in. (43.18 cm) Weight: 15
