Very scarce Eight-day cuckoo with Aesop's Fable FOX AND GRAPE THEME.
Relatively few eight-day cuckoo clocks were made during the early 20th Century. This beauty appears to have been produced around 1922 in the Black Forest by a maker named A. Flieg whose name is stamped into the brass of the movement. There is a label on the rear door that says AMERICAN CHIME CLOCK COMPANY 1669 RUFFNER STREET PHILADELPHIA, PA. phone DA 0656. The handwritten date on this label is 9-59 which we assume was the date when the clock was repaired or serviced for its owner in Philadelphia. The movement in this clock has been professionally cleaned and adjusted for perfect operation. The weights are much heavier than those found on ordinary one-day cuckoo clocks. This was needed in order to provide enough power to run the clock through the full week sequence. The old cuckoo bird bows and cuckoos on the hours with a lusty voice produced by well preserved bellows. The only 'hurt' on this clock is a missing tip to the top bird's rear wing. Fortunately, this isn't distracting because of its location. The hands and numerals are old originals as are the weights. We've never had an eight-day cuckoo in stock. And, we may not find another for quite a few years again. Height: 24 in. (60.96 cm) Depth: 8 in. (20.32 cm) Width: 17 in. (43.18 cm) Weight: 6
