This magnificent double-hood tail clock (in Dutch: STAARTKLOK), was made in Holland around 1850. On the painted iron dial, there is an animated scene from the Bible (depicting the event related in Genesis Chapter 22, verses 9 through 14)...which describes the story of Abraham as he faithfully followed God's command to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice. As Abraham prepared to kill his beloved son, the Angel Gabriel appeared overhead to order Abraham to stop. In the thicket nearby was a Ram which God had provided as a substitute for Isaac. The angel flies back and forth as the clock ticks and Abraham swings his sword up and down preparing to slay Isaac while the Ram in the thicket nods his head. The signifigance of the Biblical story is that God rewards the faitfulness of His followers. Another aspect of the story is the Christian interpretation found in the New Testament that God has provided a substitute for our sins in the person of His Son the Lord Jesus Christ,(the sacrificial "Lamb of God"). The colorful side-panels on the large double hood include hand-painted-on-wood scenes of Dutch villages. These are covered with glass to protect and preserve the paintings. This clock features the Dutch chiming system with a full strike on the hours on a deeper bell and then one strike on the first quarter hour on the same low pitched bell. Then on the half-hour, the clock strikes the previous hour on a high-toned bell and at the three quarter hour, it strikes one time on the high bell and then again on the hour, the full hour strike is sounded on the larger low-pitched bell. This magnificent clock has been well cared-for over the years and is in good condition retaining its original finish. The heavy brass movement has been professionally cleaned and operates well. Photographs of this clock were supplied by the consignor and do not do justice to the beauty of this clock. Also, when the consignor took the pictures, the statues were not in place on the top of the hood,(similar statues can be seen on several other pages of our web site). These carved figures include two Herald Angels 'blowing' upraised trumpets standing on either side of the bonnet and in the center of the top of the hood is another statue of "ATLAS" holding the world on his shoulders. OLD TIMERS LLC. is offering this clock on consignment from our Dutch clock supplier and it will be shipped to the buyer from it's location in New England. Height: 60 in. (152.40 cm) Depth: 10 in.
