Gilbert 8-day column and splat mantel clock.

In 1841, William L. Gilbert affiliated with Lucius Clarke and Ezra Baldwin to manufacture clocks in Winsted, Connecticut. The firm was known as Clarke, Gilbert and Company. Around 1845, Clarke and Baldwin sold their shares in the company to Gilbert who thereafter manufactured clocks in Winsted (CT),(a village within the town of Winchester). NOTE THE LABEL WHICH INDICATES THAT THIS IS OF WINCHESTER, CONNECTICUT MANUFACTURE). His clocks were thereafter marketed under the trade name of William L. Gilbert and Company. This particular model is quite scarce and only rarely found. It has not yet been cataloged in the books on Gilbert clocks and except for the original label inside the case, we would not have been able to identify it as his work. This is surely a handsome and sturdy clock with a nicely refinished case that retains its original painted dial. The lower door glass has an etched pattern in the form of a music lyre. Within the pattern the artist has included delicate blue highlighting. This is one hard-to-find model of the Gilbert line of fine clocks. The eight-day brass movement runs well and keeps good time...striking properly on the hours. Height: 21 in. (53.34 cm) Depth: 5 in. (12.70 cm) Width: 13 in. (33.02 cm) Weight: 4
