30 hour mantle clock by SS Higby of New Hartford, Connecticut with 30 hour wood works.
Because this clock was made by a rarely found maker, it is surely a collectors DREAM! The original lower door glass retains its "Lady In The Flower" design (with original putty); the stenciling on the half columns is very nice and the eagle on the top splat is excellent (and seems to be original). The paint on the back of the reverse eglomise is lifting a little but remains quite stable...don't touch or finger it and it should remain as it is forever! The old wood movement is complete but appears to be a replacement. It runs for a while and stops. It could be adjusted for good running if the next owner chooses to do so. The paper label inside the case is a delight! The name SS Higby is intact and reads: 'S S HIBGY NEW HARTFORD CENTER CONN.' There are also several signatures on the back of the door with dates when the clock was serviced and the names of those who performed the work. One reads "J. Bailey September 5, 1838; another says J.S. Wiskey September 18, 1852. Another lists the date 1875 and the is also a signature of a Joseph Way sdated 1877. These marks inside clocks add immeasurably to their charm and help date the piece as well. A really intriguing feature is found on the inside of the case. One of the clock's early owners has glued a hand-written letter onto the wooden back--probably to keep dust out of the movement. If the works were removed from the clock, you could easily read this letter which seems to include a signture. Who knows--it may be an important historical document??!! The price for this clock has been kept lower than one would have expected for a clock by such a rarely found maker. Except for the replaced (though old) wood works movement, this clock appears to be entirely original. Height: 29 in. (73.66 cm) Depth: 5 in. (12.70 cm) Width: 17 in. (43.18 cm) Weight: 6
