30-hour mantle clock with the Torrington (Ct.) "east-West

The name Erastus Hodges is not only pure Americana but also reminds knowlegable clock collectors of the man who produced many Connecticut wood works clocks in his shop at Torrington in the early 19th Century. The Torrington movements,(often called "East-West" movements),were wider across the inside of the case as compared to the squarer design more commonly found in other wooden movements. The 30-hour movement in this clock is running well and strikes the hours on a clear bell. The stenciling on both half-columns as well as the top 'splat' (crown) is original and well preserved. The colorful hand-painted dial adds a lot to the look of this great Early American mantle clock (see photograph). A reverse painting (eglomise) in the lower door glass is old but from the looks of the putty, might have been installed sometime after the clock was first produced...although its quite old in my opinion. This fine clock sports 'paw' feet and presents a great appearance which will grace any mantle or wall shelf in its next owner's home. Height: 27 in. (68.58 cm) Depth: 5 in. (12.70 cm) Width: 16 in. (40.64 cm) Weight: 6
