Tall case clocks with animation in the dial arch are exceptional. And of those that do include automated scenes in the dial arch, this one is unquestionably RARE! The wonderful feature of the animation is that it depicts Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. As the clock ticks Eve's arm reaches up to pluck an apple from the tree while Adam stands nearby observing the forbidden proceedings. Various animals in the background of the painted scene watch the temptation as it unfolds and a moving serpent actually slithers up and down the tree trunk. Although the Bible doesn't mention apples-the usual depiction of this scene involves an apple tree-and so it is in this scene as well. The size of the Oak case is convenient (about 6' 9") so that this fine clock can be placed in any home regardless of ceiling height. The maker's name, Thomas Coviller is signed on the painted dial as well as his town- "Alford" which is in Lincolnshire (England). There is a working seconds "bit" (dial). The calendar hand is not functional. This wonderful clock is priced well below most of its type- especially those featuring animation on the dial. The movement has been professionally cleaned and operates perfectly during its eight-day period. The bell strike sounds the hours on a clear and pleasant cup bell. Height: 78 in.
