This charming cherry-cased tall clock is often called a "Grandmother" clock due to its smaller size (6' 7"). At some time in its life, the case was shortened a bit perhaps to suit the clock for placement in one of those charming old Dutch Colonial homes with lower ceilings along the Hudson River where these clocks were produced around 1820 by the clockmaking team of Robert Hall (clockmaker) and Ebeneezer Ayers, a Silversmith who commissioned Hall to make the movements for the many tall case clocks that this team marketed over the years. The fine eight-day movement strikes the hours on a clear bell and operates well. The movement has been professionally cleaned and adjusted for good operation. The painted dial is original to the clock and was made by William Jones in Philadelphia. 19th Century tall case clocks used dials made by dial makers in England and America. The hands and pendulum on this lovely clock are also original. The Masonic Symbol inlaid into the base of the clock adds another aspect to its history. Many of our nation's leaders--including our first president George Washington were members of the Masonic Fraternity. One of their members obviously commissioned Ayers to custom make this clock for his home. Other inlay includes four small fans on the waist door and on the base of the clock (see photograph). There is an old, age separation on the small panel above the bottom of the clock (see photograph). This certainly doesn't detract from the overall appearance or worth of this exceptional tall case clock. If displayed in a metropolitan antiques shop, this beautiful clock would be priced at considerably more than the modest amount we have assigned to it. On consignment from one of the nation's foremost authorities on tall case clocks, this will grace any home where it is placed. . Height: 79 in. (200.66 cm) Depth: 10 in. (25.40 cm) Width: 19 in. (48.26 cm) Weight: 25
