Ithaca Calendar Clock Co. "No. 8 Shelf Library", ca 1880.
After much consternation and research it would appear this is the round top Shelf Library with a wrong top. The collector who brought it to me with some other calendar clocks, insisted that this was a rare model, not in any catalogs. He was right on both counts. With a correct top from the Ithaca clock supply house (See ad in this catalog) you would have a good and correct clock. Walnut case is 25 inches high, burl used strategically to highlight the applied designs in front. This top could well be original as there is some really unusual woodwork. I don't believe PaPaw made it out in the smokehouse. It has been broken in a place or two and repaired nicely. The 8 inch calendar dial is original while the 6 inches time dial is new. Two labels on the back, one from the selling dealer, dated, "March 3, 1887", and most of a large label I can't read, very dark. If I had time I would mix some Clorox and water and lighten it slightly. The clock is running and functioning properly. Ly-Calendar, page 140.
