The watch movement is enclosed in the round canister on the minute hand (the hand with the tip missing), and it runs both hands just like any clock with a series of metal gears. The small compass hanging down from the minute hand has nothing to do with the running. Most of these clocks were made between 1895 and 1920. The glass dial is 27 inches wide and still retains most of the original paint. Others we have sold were made to hang in a shop window on a chain. This free standing wood base appears to be original. I chose not to take the case apart to check for a maker's name. Surely it will need a good going over to get it running. See our Jan. 2001 catalog No. 66 and No. 67. Those two similar clocks sold for $2255 and $2156. See Derek Roberts, "Mystery, Novelty and Fantasy Clocks."
