English Dial or Act of Parliament style wall clock, ca 1850.
This is another very large wall clock made of Mahogany veneer, some flame mahogany, particularily the door and base. Trim of ribbed strips and ribbed flat columns, was used. The large case is 49 inches high, tight and solid, but has some small shrinkage places common in English wood cases. There are latching access doors on each side, and the front door has a key lock, with key. The movement, dial, and seatboard assembly slide out the front. The glass is old with some new putty to hold it. 14 inches iron painted dial is signed, "Thos. Taylor Ellesmere", with some fading. Chapter ring and numerals also have some fading but have not been strengthened. Hands, pendulum bob and stick, appear to be original. Movement is 8 day, bell strike on the hours, and running. Closely resembles most English two train tall clock movements. The post profile date the movement about 1800, so this clock may very well be 1800, not 1850. Cast into the iron false plate is the name, "Walker and Hughes". Weights are not correct, it came to us with Morbier iron weights.
