English tall clock, oak and mahogany case, ca 1720 - 1750.
Brass dial signed, "Wilkins, Loughborough", ca about 1750. Loughborough is 100 miles north of London, in the Birmingham area, which would classify this as a "northern" clock. The shape of the case door is northern; the spoked dial plate is also northern. The wheel collets and pillars are 1750's, the dial, dial plate, and spandrels, are all ca 1750's. The dial ring is applied over the spoked plate which is etched around the seconds and calendar dials. Dial is 12 inches wide, 16.5 inches high. The 8 day movement is running, has period weights and pendulum. Oak and mahogany case has great wood grains, inlays, and moldings. There is dentil molding around the top of the bonnet. The case has been strengthened inside by the using some new wood, braces, glue blocks, etc. The finial may be a replacement; the brass around the door lock is new, and the door lock itself is definitely new. Full turned columns on the hood have brass capitals and bases. This is a very nice clock at a reasonable price. The brass dial and movement should be worth our minimum.
