Ansonia Clock Co. large wall regulator, "General", ca 1905.
This rare clock is 68" high, it has some very unusual carvings on the top and sides making it 28.5 inches wide. We acquired it with a collection of outstanding Ansonia clocks. The elderly couple who sold us their collection told me this clock was cherry. I have thought for months it was cherry, but now I am in doubt. The bezel and some other parts have the look of cherry, but the case body sure looks to be mahogany, but stained to look cherry. They bought most of their clocks 30 to 40 years ago and reluctantly had to sell them when they moved to an assisted living facility. Some collectors will not like reading this, but they had every clock fully restored before it went into their home. The dials were repainted, the cases cleaned or refinished, the brass polished, and the movement put in tiptop shape. This clock is 8 day, it has 2 weights but is time only, and it has a seconds dial. The painted black stick, bob, and beat scale are original. We would expect this rare clock to easily exceed $4000. Ly-Ansonia, page 180.
