J. C. Brown iron front, ca 1855.
Following his bankruptcy in 1855, Brown used movements made by others. This case has an 8 day ribbed spring movement made and signed, "Brewster and Ingrahams, Bristol, Ct. U.S.". One might argue that this is a Brewster and Ingrahams iron front, but note the transfer in the bottom glass, a picture with the notation at the bottom, "J.C.Brown, Manufacturer". During this period several clocks were marketed by Brown with this identical picture, some with his label, some with other peoples labels, but with cases by Brown. This 18 inches high iron case has black Japanned casting with shell inlay and gold decoration, all in good condition with only minor paint loss. Good original paper dial, bezel with original putty. Read the Book n "Jonathan Clark Brown and the Forestville Manufacturing Company", by Kenneth D. Roberts and Snowden Taylor, for information about this rare clock.
