Wm. L. Gilbert Clock Co. extra large mantle clock, "Long Branch", ca 1895.
The case is 28 inches high and 16 inches wide, and in very good original condition. The finish looks more walnut or mahogany than oak. I see only one place a repair was made, an ear on the upper left side. It is a good repair and you have to be looking for repairs to even notice it. The full columns are rope twist, with other rope twist pieces around the top. Lots of grooves, ripple, applied moldings, and other special effects wood work, making this a very attractive clock. I will call the top finial original but who knows. Every one of this model you see has a slightly different finial. The Gilbert movement is 8 day, half hour strike on a good sounding coiled gong, and it is running strong. The 8 inches paper dial is in very nice condition, as is the correct Gilbert pendulum. The old glass is the same one that is shown in the catalogs. A full label graces the back of the case. We see very few of this collectable model. Ly-Gilbert No. 1178.
