Large German musical cuckoo, ca 1950, made by and signed "Hubert Herr, Triberg, Germany".
Mr. Herr started making Black Forest cuckoo clocks in 1918. The back of the case is s t a m p e d, "Germany". It has a one-day movement with three weights. Cast plates with lyre figure, worm gear driven, adjustable fly, recently cleaned and oiled. On the half hour it strikes a gong and cuckoo's one time, then plays music; each hour it strikes and cuckoo's the number of hours, and plays music. The two (or three ?) tunes alternate. See the music card photo. The names of the tunes listed on the card are; "Weggiserlied", "Lauterbachwalzer", and "Blaaue Dana". The comb has 40 teeth and the drum is 2.5 inches, and there are no problems evident. Both box bellows are new, old wood bird and figure. Music box is working, but could stand cleaning and oiling. The case body is 22 inches wide and 33 inches high, not including the weights. The case has been thoroughly cleaned, additional stain applied, and rubbed down lightly to give a nice finish with a slight sheen. New chains were installed. The deer and rabbit have large glass eyes the bird does not.
