C.1832, Joseph Dyar, Middlebury, VT, (Attrib), 8-day time and alarm wall clock (2-wt). Dyar apprenticed to Lemuel Curtis in Concord and moved to Vermont in 1822.
Condition - A very unusual mahogany and gilt wall timepiece. Dial is new with modern Dyar signature. Hands appear to be very nice copies of old hands. Gilding on the bezel has been restored. Unusual weight brass movement with an alarm. There is handwriting on the back of the door that attributes this timepiece to Dyar and stating that it was found in the attic of his home after his death, however the penmanship is poor. There is a wooden spacer board (made from an old shipping crate) that is not original, added to raise the movement, however the movement may have sat on a seat board originally. To be sure this alarm movement would have required a large head case such as this. The door and case have a nice old finish. Truncated or tapered cases like this are unique to the northern Vermont-Montreal area. Height 52 inches
