C.1873, E. Howard and Co., Boston, Custom Gallery clock made on special order for the Old Colony Railroad.

Condition: this clock is in remarkable condition, and retains its original eagle. Some restoration occurred because the eagle had been painted in the train station, and stripping revealed that it had been gilded originally. The owner found a gilder who matched the color of the original gilding on the bezel, down to some imperfections to add to the antique appearance. The clock was up and running when we took the detail fotos, however we have since removed the weight for safer transport of the clock. The movement is signed with proper Howard imprint and with the numbers 2 4 and 73, which is very likely 1873, the height of the success of the Old Colony. For details on this railroad, see article by D. O'Hanley and Geo. Kenson, posted on the internet, several pages, the intro of which reads: "In an age mercifully innocent of environmental studies, suburban sopping plazas, and the universal motorcar, the only thinkable means of overland transit was via the Old Colony Railroad, which linked Boston with distant points in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. This legendary carrier was one of the best managed of all US railroads and a veritable bonanza for its stockholders " The 20 inch wooden dial is original and though with a slight warp, has no cracks nor chips, RR name is 100% original; the " and Co" after Howard are poorly touched up. Hands, weights and case hardware are original; pulleys replaced. The Geneva stop and main arbor reinforcement are also absent, but do not affect the operation. Height 36.5 inches
