C.1820, French, Bronze with Ormolu and Marble Figural clock, AMOR TRIES TO STOP AURORA, 8-day time and bell strike, silk suspension.
Condition: overall very good restored condition, the ormolu parts re-gilded maybe 20 years ago. There is a blank hole in the cherubs right hand that probably held a gilt bow (his quiver of arrows is intact). However, a similar example of this clock, showing in FRENCH BRONZE CLOCKS, (Schiffer, 1999), page 59, explains that Amor has dropped his weapons, so we are unsure. E. Niehuser writes "Aorora, the morning red, is the biggest adversary of Amor, who is most active at night. She stops the darkness by pulling the cloak from the world. Vehemently, Amor tries to stop her from going forward". Another example in dark bronze, shows on page 124 of the same book. The movement has not been serviced in some time and lacks a pendulum. Height 22.7 inches
