C.1760, LePaute, (Jean Andre), Paris, 8-day, crown/verge, countwheel strike, mahogany over oak carcass bracket clock..
Condition: Refinished mahogany case in generally clean condition, corners are rounded from sanding, and some joint separation; although there is restoration to the case, most of it appears as old as the movement.. Silk thread suspension brass movement is signed "Gudin Lejeune" whose full name was Paul Gudin Lejeune (died 1755). Gudin shows as the cousin of Jean Baptiste Lejeune, who was half brother of Jean Andre LePaute. The two Jeans entered a partnership of clock making in Paris around 1748. I don't know French horology that well, and these bits we garnered off the internet. Should we attribute the clock to Lejeune the movement maker, or LePaute who probably sold it at the time? The seven inch porcelain dial has a chip glued in at 12, where someone put in an F/S key that was too large for the hole; heavy cast brass bezel is hinged on the left. Gilt brass hands are original. Movement appears sound, but dark and in need of service. Old silk thread pendulum works but is a bit simple for this case. Height 17 inches
