C.1848, J. C. Brown, Forestville Conn, Shelf Acorn, 8-day fusee movement, clock No. 76 from the original J. Cheney Wells collection.
Condition: first off, this is a pretty good clock, but you need to follow the story a bit. At some time a kitchen clock mov't was installed and the dial winding holes enlarged for the different spacing. At that time the spring barrels were pulled out of the fusee assembly in the bottom. A good Samaritan found the proper movement and then made 2 spring barrels out of aluminum. So now you have a great case with original dial and tablets, but with enlarged winding holes and aluminum "fusee" barrels (the wooden holder is still intact). The tablet has a new Gothic house as designed by Andrew Jackson Downing, (popular architecture for the rich after 1845). Retains good original label. Screwed to the case back is a brass plaque attest to this item as clock No. 76 from J. Cheney Wells. Also with a faded handwritten repair label from Fishkill, NY "C. E. Pelham, March 17, 1881" Height 24 inches
