C.1943, German, Gerh. D. Wempe, Hamburg, No. 3864, 2-Day Chronometer with both inner and outer box (matching), late war production with bakelite [Metailgummi] gimbal, aluminum tub, and simple tension gimbal lock.
Condition: Virtually unused, this box has been in the hands of one man since June of 1944, when it was taken at the Luftwaffe Base at Travemunde (north coast near Wismar), and comes with a note to that effect. Owner is willing to correspond with purchaser and provide full story. The movement is reliable German Einheitschronometer that was standardized in 1942. The full Wempe story is available on the internet. Mahogany inner box with Wempe lD plate and No. 3864, number also imprinted into the mahogany; outer padded box of oak, painted drab military green; original leather strap has broken; felt covering over sisal is failing. Runs but would benefit from service. Original clutch-key intact. The lightweight construction would suggest this box was made for Luftwaffe use, also with unique balance lock on outside of tub (Frei No. 150; Fest); handiest design I've seen. Ht of inner box = 7" [18cm] Ht of outer box = 10" [25.4cm]
