C.1750, French, Boulle Clock by imminent maker, Jean Baptiste Baillon, Paris, the 3-train quarter striking movement with crown /verge escapement and silk thread suspension, in an unusually small case.
Condition: some of the tortoise shell veneer is loose, other repair spots. Parts of the oak carcass do not look period, door latch is missing. A couple of the numeral cartouche on the dial have damage; hands are later. A full 3 train movement is seldom found in this time period, and the movement is sound and never abused, however one vertical rod, hammer and bell are missing (is supposed to have ting-tang quarters), and the current quarter bell and stand are replacements. Movement and dial go together and are both signed by the maker. Research will show that Baillon was well regarded for his use of quality materials and high standards, and was perhaps the most successful French maker of his day. Baillon was clockmaker to Marie Antoinette, and his name is as important to horology in France as the Willard name is in the US. From Tucson estate. Ht 25" [63.5cm]
